Minerals Species: Almandine Garnet on Albite.
Location of mineral deposit: Russell, Hampden County, Massachusetts.
Description: Lustrous brown-black trapezohedral almandine garnet crystals scattered over one face of white albite. One crystal is missing at the top edge, resulting in a contact in one of the large almandine crystals. A classic specimen from New England. The specimen was extracted from solid rock, not from a cavity, resulting in minor surface imperfections where the surrounding matrix was removed. Collected in late-1800s..
Overall size of mineral specimen: 10x9x5 cm.
Size of individual crystals: 3-19 mm.
