| Mineral Species: Goethite-Hematite. Location of origin: Dongan Hills iron mining district, Staten Island, New York City, Richmond County, New York. Description: Large specimen of goethite-hematite iron ore with an internal cavity lined with lustrous black botryoidal goethite. The goethite-hematite formed from iron liberated by the decomposition of serpentine and was mined in surficial deposits in the area. No damage. Ex Joe Cilen (1916-1997) #1181. Overall size: 17x10x9 cm. Size of individual crystals: 5-10 mm |
