Description of Mineral Specimen for sale No. 326:

Mineral Species: Almandine Garnet in schist.
Location of origin: near the Spuyten Duyvil, northern Manhattan Island, New York City, New York County, New York.
Description: Elongated plate of Manhattan Schist with scattered dark wine-red almandine garnet crystals. The almandine crystals stand proud of the schist due to differential weathering - the schist is softer than the hard garnet crystals. Ex. Irving Horowitz collection #NYC1, collected in 1938, with old photo showing him collecting the specimen.
Overall size: 17x7x4.5 cm.
Size of individual crystals: 2-10 mm
