Description of Mineral Specimen for sale No. 338:

Mineral Species: Goethite.
Location of origin: Emerson Hill iron mining district, Staten Island, New York City, Richmond County, New York.
Description: Flat plate of dark-brown goethite with botryoidal formations on the surfaces. Goethite formed by the decomposition of the serpentine bedrock was mined as iron ore on Staten Island beginning in earnest around 1830 and continued until the 1880s. No damage. Ex. Perham's of West Paris (Maine).
Overall size: 10.5x8.5x2 cm.
Size of individual crystals: 1 mm
