Mineral Species: Dravite-Uvite Tourmaline in Inwood Marble (best of find).
Location of origin: Harlem Ship Canal excavation, norther Manhattan Island, New York City, New York County, New York.
Description: Lustrous transparent brown dravite-uvite tourmaline crystal in fine-grained gray Inwood Marble. These brown tourmaline crystals range from dravite (sodium-rich) to uvite (calcium-rich), often with a single crystal so should be labeled as dravite-uvite. Personally collected in 1997 from excavated rock dumped near Inwood Park. Illustrated in Manhattan Mineral Collecting (1998) Mineral News Vol. 14, #1, p.1-8.
Overall size: 24x24x18 mm.
Size of individual crystals: 12 mm
